Critical Infrastructure. Delivered with Confidence.
Prime Port Timaru operates a significant marine cargo depot, including a 5-hectare log storage facility adjacent to the No. 1 Extension Wharf.
In 2020 they committed to upgrading this unpaved storage yard to a high-quality heavy-duty asphalt-paved facility. The $7.2 million contract was split into four separate portions to ensure the log yard operation contractor, NFA Holdings, maintained an adequate and safe operation area throughout the construction period. Rooney’s worked closely with Prime Port Timaru and NFA Holdings to complete the contract whilst maintaining a fully operational log yard and minimising any potential disturbance to operations.
This project is an excellent example of how Rooney undertook almost every aspect of the work during the construction period to a high level of quality. All of the works were tested and quality assured by an external Engineering Consultant.
From sourcing gravel, crushing the aggregate, drainage through to cement stabilisation of the structural pavement areas, the project provides an appropriate example of the company’s engineering capability.
Project Scope:
- Excavation of 5,200 cubic metres of waste material
- Crush and supply 33,000 cubic metres of gravel pavement base
- A total of 800 metres of drainage system piped to control stormwater
- Crush and supply 15,300 cubic metres of cement stabilised M4 AP40 gravels
- 75mm layer of structural Asphalt layer over grade 4 membrane seal.

Technical Information:
The construction process and timing were closely co-ordinated with the log export operation run by NFA Holdings. Receiving and exporting of logs continued throughout the build period, carefully programmed in conjunction with Rooney’s project management.
Outcomes:
A successful contract that achieved budget and programme. This was almost fully constructed by Rooney’s who undertook earthmoving, gravel crushing and cartage, cement stabilisation and all drainage. Asphalt and seal were the only tasks subcontracted.
